December is usually the time that we reflect on the entire year. But at the same time, we are focused on a strong December finish. And as the dealer, you are always searching for ways to improve your business.
It should be relatively easy to take a financial inspection of your business. Working with your Controller should allow you to analyze your dealership's financial and operational strengths and weaknesses.
Departmental Net is generally the driving force in measuring a Manager's success and rightfully so. Holding a Manager accountable for the items they control is critical. The inverse is that it is unfair to hold them accountable for the items they cannot control. Some examples could be high rent factors, expenses unrelated to their departments operation, or inaccurate overhead allocations.
Once you have reconciled the two, it will allow you to objectively evaluate each department head. Key indicators such as gross profit margins, people expenses, advertising budgets and other Manager discretionary spending should be a consideration on whether you retain a manager or part ways.
Even though I have had years of experience in evaluating people, I am not sitting in your seat. So, passing judgment on whether you have the right managers or not is not my business.
